Jelena Vujić (PhD), Full Professor, Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade

Jelena Vujic (PhD), Full Professor, was born and raised in Belgrade where she graduated from the Faculty of Philology, Belgrade University. She has been employed at the Faculty of Philology since 1998. She defended her MA thesis Composition as a word-formation process in computer register in English in 1999. In 2003, she defended her doctoral dissertation Inflection as a word-formation process in English. In 2006, she became an Assistant Professor. In 2012, she was assigned Associate Professorship and in 2016 she was given tenure (Full Professorship). Currently, she teaches courses in Descriptive grammar of English 1 -2 (undergraduate studies), English morphology and lexicology (undergraduate studies), Word-Formation Theories in Contemporary Linguistics and Compounds Across Languages (doctoral studies). She is a well-published author who has participated and presented her papers at more than 50 international conferences and congresses world-wide. Her publication record includes more than 60 scholarly articles published both in Serbia and internationally.  Her scientific interests include word-formation patterns in English and Serbian, features of loanwords, language contact, sociolinguistic aspects of the language of the diasporas, translation studies etc.. She is the author of the following books: Osnovi morfologije engleskog jezika (2006), Describing English through Theory and Practice I (2011), Describing English through Theory and Practice II (2012), Konstrukcione teme (2016), Osnovi morfologije i leksikologije engleskog jezika (2020) and Describing English through Form, meaning and Use (2022). Prof. Vujic is a PI on the following scientific research projects: Developing Applied Foreign Language Skills (DAFLS) Erasmus+KA2; Strategic partnership 2020-FR01-KA203-080673 and Cooperation of Serbian Science with Diaspora Written Cultural Heritage of Serbian Diaspora in English and Serbian in the USA (1):  Serbian-American Periodicals (1900-1960) бр. 6462817 (funded by Science Fund of RS) and the team member in the project IDENTITIES,  Digitizing Heritage Culture and Language Identity of the Serbian Diaspora no. 1548, funded by the Science Fund, RS.

She was awarded the following scholarships: British Scholarship Trust (2000), European Society for the Study of English, ESSE Bursary Type B (2005). Since 2010, Prof. Vujic has been an Associate of CEERES at the University of Chicago. She is a member of the following professional associations: International Linguistic Association, North American Association for Serbian Studies, Philologia, Serbian Society for Applied Linguistics, SEESA, North American Research Network in Historical Sociolinguistics, Slavic Linguistic Society. In addition, she serves as a member of the editorial board of several language journals including ESP Today, Philologia, Nasledje and Belgrade BELLS among others. From October 2016- July 2018, Prof. Vujic held the position of Head of the English Language and Literature Department.

Since 2021 she has been sitting on the Committee for Accreditation and Quality Assurance in higher education with Serbian National Agency for Quality Assurance (NAQA).

Aleksandar Milanović (PhD), Full Professor, Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade

Aleksandar Milanović (PhD), Full Professor was born, raised and educated in Belgrade. He graduated from the Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade where he defended his MA thesis Osobine jezika Novina srpskih (1813-1822) in 1999. He defended his doctoral thesis Jezik Jovana Subotića in 2008.  Since 1997, Prof. Milanović has been employed at the Serbian Department, Faculty of Philology first as a teaching assistant, Assistant and Associate Professor respectively, only to be awarded Full Professorship in 2019. He has taught courses in Historical Phonetics of Serbian, Historical Morphology of Serbian, Historical Grammar of Serbian I, Historical Grammar of Serbian II, History of Standard Serbian, Basics of Serbian Language Norming (undergraduate studies), Academic writing and Serbian for Transaltors (master studies), Historical Standardology of Serbian (doctoral studies).

Prof. Milanović has over 150 scientific articles and research papers published in prestigious journals and publications both in Serbia and abroad and he has taken part at least that many conferences, congresses, round tables and workshops. He is the author of the following books: Кратка историја српског књижевног језика (Београд: Завод за уџбенике, 2004, 2006, 2010), Језик српских песника (Београд: Завод за уџбенике, 2010), Језик весма полезан (Београд: Друштво за српски језик и књижевност Србије, 2013), Језик Јована Суботића (Београд: Чигоја штампа, 2014), Реч под окриљем поетике (Краљево: Народна библиотека „Стефан Првовенчани“, 2016) и Вуков век (Београд: Чигоја штампа, 2019). He is the co-author of   Речник славеносрпског језика : огледна свеска (Нови Сад: Матица српска, 2017). His scholarly interests include among others, historical linguistic issues, stylistic issues in language, language norm and standardization issues, language contact, terminology and many other language-related issues. Professor Milanović is the member of the following professional committees and organizations: Standard Slavic Languages Committee (affiliated to the International Slavic Committee), International Slavic Centre Council, Association of Slavic Societies of Serbia, Executive Board of Matica srpska, Executive board of Vukova zadzžbina, Slavic Linguistic Society, Department of Language and Speech at Kolarac National University, National Committee for Non-material Cultural Heritage, North-American Research Network in Historical Sociolinguistics. He is the Vice-President of the Committee for the History of Language Standards (affiliated to the Serbian Language Standardization Board) and Serbian Society for Language and Literature.

He serves on editorial boards of scholarly journals Српски језик Књижевност и језик. He has been appointed the President of the Council for the Serbian Language with the Ministry of Culture, RS.

Ljiljana Progovac (PhD), Full Professor, Wayne State University, Detroit, MI, USA

Prof. Ljiljana Progovac is a linguist with research interests in syntax, Slavic syntax, and the evolution of syntax. She is professor of Linguistics at Wayne State University in Detroit, USA, and she spent her sabbatical leave in 2018/19 as a visiting scholar at MIT, Cambridge, MA. She graduated from the University of Novi Sad and obtained her MA from the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Philology. Prof. Progovac defended her doctoral thesis at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, 1988. So far she has held the following positions: University of Novi Sad, Serbia, Assistant Professor of English, 1982-85, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, English Composition, 1986-88, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, Visiting Assistant Professor of Linguistics, 1990-91, Wayne State University, Detroit, MI, Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor, Linguistics, 1991-present, Wayne State University, Detroit, MI, Linguistics Program Director, 2007-present, University of Venice, Italy, Visiting Assistant Professor of Linguistics, Spring 1995, University of Chicago, Linguistics Society of America (LSA) Summer Institute Instructor, 2015, MIT, Cambridge, MA, Visiting Scholar, 2018/19.  Her expertise and research focus lie in the fields of evolution of language, evolution of syntax, syntax, Slavic syntax. She received the prestigious award Marylin Williamson Humanities Center Grant to study the processing of evolutionarily simpler syntax (“proto-syntax”) through fMRI experiments. In 2022, she was admitted into the prestigious Wayne State Academy of Scholars. Prof. Progovac is an internationally well-published scholar with impressive list of publications.
